John Wayne Builders

What follows is a transcript along with screenshots from Phil Jennings, a disgruntled backer of the Vega+. Phil sent a long email conversation he had with Lee Fogarty in late July 2017. Please note that Lee's personal details have been scrubbed and the words [PRIVATE] have been substituted in the following email exchange.

Dear Sir/Madam

I have recently started my own business, having worked as a builder for others for many years. I am not very tech-savvy and my eldest son James has been nagging at me to get a website up and going. I do not understand how the whole internet works and at my age do not care to learn - I just want a website for my business and to pay someone to house it and keep it working.

Some more infos :

I live in Hucknall and do jobs in the surrouding areas.
My specialty is rennovations rather than building new dwellings.
I want a photos page. I have about 20 photos on my phone of rennovations I have worked on but would like to download more as my projects get done.
I want a testamonials screen - I have collected about half a dozen from customers allready.
I have a few trusted tradies I work with and would like to mention them somewhere.
My hour rate varies depending on the size of the job. I want people to ring me for quotes, not fill in forms.
Do I need a facebook page? I do'nt know how many would search facebook for a builder you see.

James says I might need something called Word-Press or Jumla. Do you know about these?

Does this website sound like something you can do? Can you give me a rough estimate what you would charge to make my site and to house it per year?

Phil

PS: I have contacted 2 other website outfits this week and nobody has replied yet !! Hopefully you will be 1st !!

Hi Phil,

This is certainly something we can help with and offer advice. Prices vary from around £500 upwards depending on requirements. If you'd like to give me a call on [PRIVATE] we can discuss the options and hosting costs.

Regards,

Lee

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the reply !!

Once the site is up and running, what are the ongoing costs per year likely to be? I need this for my budgetting.

And when I give the go ahead, when would you be available to start and finish it? Are we talking a week, fortnight, month, months? I'll try and give you a bell later on but I can hardly hear myself over the other tradies power tools right now.

Phil

Ongoing costs vary depending on whether we are updating the site for you. Hosting starts at £10pm which puts you on a very secure server - cheaper hosting generally means you are on a server with hundreds of other websites, and if they are hacked your site goes down too. That doesn't happen with ours, and websites run quicker too.

We can run through various options later as to how we can help and what you can do to help yourself. It sounds like a small site so can probably start within a week and spend 2 weeks on it. A lot depends on how picky the client is - most love the first design they see which clearly keeps costs down!

I'm out for the rest of the day now but will be around this evening if that's easier for you to chat?

Regards,

Lee

Hi Lee,

Emailing works for me as I have everything in front of me and won't forget things. I'm not to familiar with the technical side of things and makes it easier for budgetting costs with my accountant.

Once we get all the costs hammered out and I have a list of them I will call to discuss any finer points.

What would it cost as an upkeep charge to get you to add things to it?
I will probably need you to download new photos onto that pictures section for me.
Also change some text every month or so if I need it.
James is saying I must have a facebook page - is there a way you can add the new pictures and text automatically to facebook for me somehow?

Phil

From: Creative Spectrum <enquiries@creative-spectrum.co.uk>
To: Phil Jennings

Basic text changes are part of the hosting at £10pm - if we feel there are a lot of changes we can review it but most people tend to stick with what they have anyway. I have a couple that change prices etc.

For the photos I would suggest you get an Instagram account and the website links to that - this means you don't have to maintain the pictures as they are pulled straight from Instagram! I suspect James can help you there as well as get me the details I will need for the website.

He's right about Facebook. It's a huge advantage these days. Unfortunately FB change the rules and scripts so often it's not worth the time trying to integrate.

For other text, I would suggest a blog or similar - basically at the end of a decent project, sent me a couple of pictures and some text - it's a good idea to spend an hour or so on this, explaining the project, hurdles, requirements, etc. I add blog posts at a cost of £10 per post, and suggest 1 per month. However beware that a lot of people start with good intentions and then forget!

When a post is made, it's a link to click to like on Facebook, so setting up a page is a good idea, and you keep the page active with the blog posts.

So on total there we have £500 for the initial build, £10pm hosting with minor text changes included and £10pm for one blog post.

Hi Lee

Communication means a lot to me, and you've been very quick to respond. This is a rare thing these days, and I have a good feeling about you. I would like to get the ball rolling.

If you can send me an invoice for doing the website including the first years hosting and once a month changes I will pay you Monday by bank transfer.

Please make the invoice out in the name of Phil Jennings and I will set up the payment. I assume you will be able to start sometime next week and have it ready to go a fortnight or so after that?

Hi Phil, thanks for the comments :) yes I can start Monday. I have another project to finish in the meantime so I'll work on that tomorrow instead and get going on yours. Have you got a logo you can send me? Website colours depend greatly on the logo. I'll also need an idea of domain name to buy for you. There will be other details too which I'll email at the time.

I meant to add that I would strongly suggest having a contact form that emails you. Some people shouldn't be browsing the web at work and may not be able to phone you during the day so you could potentially miss out!

Hi Lee

Sounds like we have a deal! If you send me that invoice I will get that transferred to you tomorrow so you can make a start Monday. I will speak to James, and get him to help me pick a domain name. I don't want it in my name so if we pick one can you buy it for me like you said, easier all round.

I will see James tomorrow and let you know on colours and so on. Quite keen on black and yellow like Hucknall FC. Do we just type in www.domainwewant.co.uk and it doesn't come up then it is available? Or is there a place you reccommend to look for domains?

Hi Phil,

I've attached the invoice.

For domain names, the best to go to would be https://www.names.co.uk/domain-names as you can search easily there.

I'm happy you chose yellow as that is the colour most builders go for! Probably because of CAT?

Hi Lee

Thanks for the invoice but thought I had best check as the document you sent says something about retro computers - what's that? My computer is a fairly new one from currys?

You have not included vat, I presume you are not vat registered then, good lad, smart of you, on that basis are you up for a cash deal on this, save us both a few quid? Me or my lad could shoot over first thing tomorrow with the cash if the price is right and we can both save a bit on tax by doing it in cash. Let me know a price if that works for you.

Hi Lee

£700 sounds good to me, I'll pop around tomorrow afternoon with the money - it'll probably be around 5pm after work if that suits?

James and me have been looking at the site you said, and I quite liked "yourmove.builder" as a lot of jobs come about just after moving house. James reckons that's a bit boring and reckons we need something more memorable.

My two other sons Wayne and John both left school as tearaways and theyve been helping me on bigger jobs. I really need to let them give it a go themselves and take over when I retire one day, and James reckon the family joke of switching their names up "johnwayne.builder" would be a great name and memorable on the back of the van. He says a tag line under it "we're no cowboys" would be really good and stand out and get a lot of business. The more I think about it, the more I like it so that's what I'll go with.

Phil

OK, I've purchased www.johnwayne.builders – this is more expensive than a generic .co.uk or .com, so for your future accounting it's £29.99pa. I'll add the tag line to the website too :) You won't see anything on it yet as I need to set it up on my servers then start the design.
I'll speak to James tomorrow as technically you can only upload photos to Instagram via your phone, but there is a way to upload other images too, so he can start looking for pictures to add to the gallery. We'll also briefly go through the facebook page too. If he makes me admin, it helps when I add projects as I can add get them showing on FB at the time rather than have to keep reminding people :)
Most of the initial content will come from yourself or James as it will be text or photos – generic website images are ok, but genuine photos are a lot better!

Hi Lee

Good work! Is there a chance you can whack up some sort of holding page, with the slogan on it so we can see how it might look?

"We ain't no cowboys"

As I am going to be a bit flush with cash this week when this current job pays out, I might think about spending some money on some PR type stuff for the new site and company, do you know anyone who might be up for some cash PR type work? It needs to be someone you know and trust I don't want to be messed around, so only someone good you know.

Hi Lee

Really sorry going to have to bring the cash tomorrow as the bloody van making a really bad noise, think the cam shaft or something on the way out. I'm going to have to drop it off at my mates who has a garage, and I can borrow one of his vans for tomorrow as I need one to pick up a load of timber. I'll have to come to you tomorrow evening instead. Sorry to mess you about but crack on and maybe you'll have something to show me when I get there by then anyway.

For initial pr I'd suggest a designed logo for the van, clothing, business cards etc. also a banner to put up outside jobs, and flyers to post locally when you are working. We can also target adverts on Facebook which often works better than google. These are all things we can help with but a lot depends on budget. I also do a lot of work with and architectural service so cross advertising there may work - he's been on DIY SOS which is also a good way to get work if you're wearing branded clothing at the time! If you can let me know an approximate budget I can work out the best way forward. I'd strongly suggest a logo - typically a decent one is £75 and provided in a format that can shrink to a business card or blown up to fit a van

Hi Lee

All sounds good, I like those ideas, maybe for the logo can we do something using that slogan we said 'we ain't no cowboys' and maybe like a builder type little figure but with a cowboy hat on rather than a hard hat?

If there's enough cash involved (as in thousands) can you get my boys on that tv show then? Or do you have some contacts that could get them in the newspapers, or something like that? Not sure what for but something that will get them noticed, if you can guarantee it the money won't be an issue!

Phil has managed to get Lee to:

  • Admit the phone number on the Creative Spectrum website is indeed Lee's.
  • Reveal the actual price of a website for a "man off the street" - £500.
  • Reveal the actual cost that Lee charges to host a website - £10/month.
  • Reveal how much Lee charges to add a blog post to a website - £10/post.
  • Admit that Lee lives at the Nottingham address that he had returned court documents from, claiming not to live there.
  • Send out an invoice to a client, without a phone number or address.
  • Accept a cash job, happy to admit to a stranger that he will bypass the tax man.
  • Missed an obvious chess reference "your move" in the first domain name idea, an obvious connection to David Levy/RCL.
  • Convince Lee that a "cowboy builders" website is a good idea.
  • Convince Lee to purchase a domain name without ever speaking to the client.
  • Convince Lee to start work on the website without ever speaking to the client.
  • Lee will accept work and payment for 1 year of hosting and blog posts in advance, despite the fact his company Creative Spectrum is listed to be struck off on Companies House.
